Backing Birmingham’s bid to become England’s first Living Wage City

M. Lambe Construction is getting behind Birmingham’s bid to become England’s first accredited Living Wage City.

Across the West Midlands, staff working at over 219 businesses, including M. Lambe Construction, are set for a pay increase as the new Living Wage rates rise to £9.30 across the UK and £10.75 in London.

The real Living Wage is independently-calculated according to the basic costs of living. It is the only UK wage rate that is voluntarily paid by over 6,000 UK businesses who believe their staff deserve a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.

The existing legal minimum wage or ‘national living wage’ for people aged 25 and over is £8.21-an-hour and for the under 25s, it is just £7.70 an hour.

With 21% of workers, 76,000 people, across the West Midlands, picking up less than the real Living Wage, M. Lambe Construction has joined the Birmingham Living Wage Foundation to support the city in becoming entirely Living Wage committed.

Michael Lambe, Director, M. Lambe Construction, said: “Our vision is to be recognised as an industry-leading civil engineering contractor which strives for excellence in every respect.

Central to this strategy is the recruitment of a loyal, highly motivated and happy team. As an accredited Living Wage company, we have been able to attract, but most importantly, retain some very talented individuals. By providing them with a fulfilling and rewarding environment to work in, we believe they will stay with us for the long-run and help make us the best civil engineering business in the region to work for.”
