Base Camp trek raises £2,655 for #DropTheKnife

In a stand against knife crime, Dave Mee, along with fellow fundraisers, Will, Alex and Paul, trekked 160km and scaled the 5380m climb to Mount Everest Base Camp in aid of #DropTheKnife.

Violence on our streets is at its highest since records began, with 1 knife crime incident happening every 16 minutes.

#DROPTHEKNIFE is a National program, delivering powerful workshops and effective mentoring to young people who are at high risk of losing their lives and futures, through knife crime and gang violence.

Dave Mee, M. Lambe Construction, Senior SHE Manager, said: “Will Flint is a very good friend of mine and set up Drop The Knife CIC after he was a stabbed 12 times in 2017. Thankfully, he survived but as a result of his injuries, has severe nerve damage, heavy scarring, asthma and permanent paralysis of his left diaphragm. We decided to organise a fundraiser to help raise awareness of the potential consequences of carrying a knife and provide financial support for the charity.”

With the climb to base camp, in metres, a staggering 5380, the same number of people admitted to hospital last year as a result of a knife attack, the sponsored climb seemed like a fitting tribute.

“The climb was a once in a lifetime opportunity. There were several unexpected challenges along the way, but thankfully, everyone made it to Base Camp and returned home reasonably unscathed. We now face an even bigger challenge – continuing the stand against knife crime.”
