Council leaders up and down the country want their towns and cities to be a place of aspiration, offering their citizens a wealth of employment opportunities and a higher quality of life. Attracting new business prospects is a key element of achieving this goal.
For business leaders, cities that have a good education system, a talented labour force, efficient transport, excellent public services, state-of-the-art connectivity and affordable housing will come out on top. This means the pressure is on council bosses to secure inward investment to address any weaknesses they may have when attracting new companies.
Like every major city, in isolation, Derby and Nottingham have their own key strengths and weaknesses. Courting inward investment from Central Government, infrastructure agencies, education agencies and foreign direct investment (FDI) is a really big challenge, when every city is competing for the same slice of pie. A great deal of work needs to be done to get heard above the noise of the competition.
This is why an economic growth plan, entitled ‘The Economic Case for the Derby-Nottingham Metro’, has recommended Derby and Nottingham’s City Councils come together to unlock regional growth.
You can read the full report by clicking here – but in short, close collaboration between the two cities on areas, such as: greater connectivity, attracting new investment from across the globe, developing the knowledge and skills of the workforce, and providing high quality public services, has the potential to generate an additional £11bn GVA (Gross Value Added) to the new Metro area by 2030.
As the Derby-Nottingham Metro area grows and prospers, M. Lambe Construction will continue to invest in the East Midlands, building the homes and infrastructure needed to sustain this growth.
And we are contributing to its development right now. At Hackwood Farm in Derbyshire, our team are supporting Miller Homes and Redrow Homes with building 243 new homes and associated infrastructure works.
We’ve also worked with Lovell Partnerships to carry out civil engineering works for the £100m regeneration of the Castleward area of Derby. The project consisted of 164 new homes, 16,500 square feet of commercial space and extensive remodelling of the surrounding highways.
At the heart of our success are our people. We are always on the lookout for skilled groundworkers, plant operators, site supervisors, project managers, engineers, contract managers, estimators, quantity surveyors, buyers and health and safety advisors – whatever your interests, there is a role for you at M.
