Derby a ‘Powerhouse’ for growth

Derby is the third fastest growing city economy in the UK after its GVA grew from 1.6% in Q2 to 1.9% in Q3. That is according to the UK Powerhouse: Winter 2017 report, which provides a quarterly estimate of GVA and job creation within 45 UK cities: 12 months ahead of the Government’s official figures.

The city jumped an impressive 27-places into third, positioning it behind only Aberdeen and Cambridge in the GVA Powerhouse Table.

Published in January 2018 by the Centre for Economics and Business Research, the report attributed the impressive growth to the city’s manufacturers, such as Toyota, Rolls-Royce and Bombardier Transportation, who had benefitted from increased competitiveness on the global market due to the weak pound. The improvement in the manufacturing sector also created more job opportunities, with annual employment rising by 0.4%.

Derby was joined by two key rising stars in terms of GVA growth: Sunderland and Hull which rose 27 and 26 places respectively on the Powerhouse table.

At M. Lambe Construction, we have been investing in Derby, building the homes and infrastructure needed for the city to grow. Our large East Midlands-based labour force has helped construct a number of flagship developments, including:

  • Kier Living’s Manor Kingsway in Derby, where we constructed foundations for 200 houses with associated infrastructure, including a complex remodelling of a busy junction of the A5111 maintaining: a live carriageway at all times.
  • We’ve also worked with Lovell Partnerships to carry out civil engineering works for the £100m regeneration of the Castleward area of Derby. Previously an unattractive and underused brownfield location on the edge of the city centre, the project consisted of 164 new homes, 16,500 square feet of commercial space, extensive remodelling of the surrounding highways and the high specification upgrade of the boulevard connecting the Westfield Shopping Centre to Derby Train station.
